Policy Papers
Priorities:
Government Spending
State government should not spend more money than the amount it collects through taxes. Over-spending is a bi-partisan problem, and Kansas’ debt is at record levels. It is irresponsible for state lawmakers to pass large amounts of debt on to future generations of Kansans.
I support a constitutional amendment requiring a 60% majority of the legislature to approve any tax increase.
I support a balanced budget amendment requiring a 60% legislative majority to approve any deficit spending (increasing the state debt).
Property Tax Reform:
The value of a home should be decided primarily by the free market, not by the government.
I support changing the law so that a home’s assessed value cannot grow faster than the inflation rate.
Education:
I support maintaining quality, well-funded education in Kansas.
Education budgets should be decided by the legislature, not by the courts.
Judicial Reform
Kansas judges should interpret Kansas laws – not create new laws.
Unlike the way our federal judges our selected, the current system of selecting our Kansas judges is unaccountable to the voters of Kansas.
I support a change to the federal model of judicial selection – where the Kansas governor appoints judges, and where the state senate votes to confirm.
Property Rights
Hard-working Kansans should be able to keep homes and businesses that they own. Eminent domain should only be used for true public uses, such as for roads or government buildings. If a local government wishes to acquire a person’s land for the purpose of growing the local economy, then that government should be required to bid for the private property, just as every other American is required to do. Law-abiding citizens should not be forced to sell their homes to a city, if the city is going to then give the property to a private company.
Building a Culture of Life:
I desire for the laws of Kansas to value life at all stages, from conception to natural death.
Enforcing Immigration Laws
The United States is the most prosperous nation in the world, and it is natural that millions of people around the world wish to come to our country. It is within our rights to make sure that non-citizens who wish to become legal residents are high-skilled workers who want to become part of American culture. It is also the right of Americans to require that future legal residents follow an orderly application process.
The federal government should increase the enforcement of our nation’s borders. The federal government should also improve the overall immigration process, so that when American businesses require an increased supply of labor, that there are enough legal immigrants to fill the jobs.
Kansas laws should not encourage illegal immigration to our state, and state laws should not ignore federal laws with regard to providing taxpayer benefits to illegal immigrants.
